Information about backup alternatives

Backup alternative 1 - Standard Backup
Each day a central backup server sends an inquiry to every client to start a backup-process which takes backup on all closed files. Closed files means the OS, softwares or files that users has permission to modify, execute or read. Examples of files or programs that has majority of open files are pagefile.sys, AD, Exchange, MySQL and MSSQL.

If customer also desires backup on open files can this be done by extracting information to file, thus making these files included in the backup. Note that it´s the customers responsibility that extraction is made and that the files are in working condition.

Ipeer excludes different OS paths since the backup software will not be able to backup open files. A full restore of OS with the included backup is therefore impossible.
Example Exclusion list, Windows platform:
Pagefile, Recycle Bin, System Volume Information
All Windows relating paths and programs.
All catalogues and file extensions with the name tmp and temp.

The exclusion schedule is not for all paths under the exclusion list, but it is good to presume that important data should be saved in other paths to achieve correct backup.
Standard backup has VSS (Volume Shadow Copy) support, software with own VSS-writer has backup.
Ipeer does not guarantee that VSS data is consistent in the backup. To secure consistent backups, we recommend that customer extract databases etc. to file e.g. “dump”.

Database
Some databases for example MySQL does not support VSS, so databases must be extracted to file by the customer for the backup to function accordingly.

Virtualization
If customer use several different virtualization instances on the server such as Xen, Wmware and Hyper-V etc. backup is not automatically included in the different VM’s. Customer has to notify Ipeer in writing with complete backup specification, and also provide connectivity and login possibilities.

System recovery
If an operating system crashes entirely, Ipeer will re-install the entire operating system. It´s not possible to restore the operating system with the included backup. After the operating system is re-installed, Ipeer restores all files from the backup. Program and configuration must then be installed and configured.

Retention schedule
Backup is using this retention schedule. One full backup, two incremental, total 7 days back in time. One restore is based on one full backup, consequently we can restore files 5-7 days back in time, depending on how old the oldest full backup is. Standard backup is calculated from a data amount of total 75 GB/server for the entire retention schedule. The cost for additional data above this limit is 2 SEK/GB/month.

Server load
The customer is responsible that the chosen server solution is not under-dimensioned for its purpose. If the server load is too high, Ipeer cannot guarantee backup.

Important information
For Ipeer to guarantee backup, Ipeer must have connectivity and login possibilities, and it´s important that the backup configuration is not altered by customer to maintain consistent backups. Time that Ipeer spends for backup restore, is charged the customer according to prices for extra services. If customer want to cancel chosen backup solution, alternatively exclude certain paths from the backup, notification shall be sent to Ipeer via a specific cancellation form.    

Backup alternative 2 – Premium Backup
Premium backup is offered as an add-on service for customers who aim for a disaster recovery solution. The service is based on offsite image backup. With Premium backup, it´s possible to restore backup that include system configuration to both existing and new hardware, but this cannot be guaranteed.

Some files and paths can be excluded according to the same schedule as Standard Backup if nothing else is agreed upon. Premium Backup integrates with VSS. However, Ipeer does not guarantee that VSS restored data is consistent. To secure consistent backups, it´s recommended that customer extract databases or other open files to disk.

Retention schedule:
Premium Backup is calculated from a data amount of total 250 GB /server for the entire retention schedule. The cost for additional data above this limit is 2 SEK/GB/month.

The first backup in every week schedule is saved for 4 weeks.

Backup alternative 3 - BackupExec    

BackupExec is offered as an add-on service to customers with higher demands on backup on certain software such as MSSQL, Hyper-V and Exchange etc. This service is customized from customer needs.
Where Standard Backup only can restore MSSQL databases from a certain time per day, BackupExec with the license Microsoft SQL offers restore of data with much higher interval.
Standard backup cannot restore Exchange at all, but BackupExec with the license Microsoft Exchange, can offer restore even on individual mailboxes.

Microsoft Windows Systems (file)

BackupExec can also act as file backup. Files and paths can be excluded according to the same schedule as Standard Backup if nothing else is agreed upon.
